Houdini (14yrs) was one of 3 kittens we rescued, along with their Mama, in 2011. He was the last one to make it inside and it wasn't because of all the efforts we had made. We had been feeding Mama and it took many months for her to trust and allow me to go sit on the deck and pet her. Once I did, I realized she was nursing babies. They were on the other side of the wall from our place…but one day, they appeared on the wall, as they were big enough to jump up there and sit up there with her. It wasn't long until a neighbor showed up with a crate and two kittens inside (one brother and one sister), as they knew we were feeding the Mama. I let Mama know I had her babies inside the house and would bring her in to see them and then put her back out since there was one baby left. After many failed attempts at catching him, she was the one that sat out in our yard while meowing at him to follow her. It was Mama that brought him inside the house. We finally had the entire family and that was the last day they were ever outside. Houdini was appropriately named after the attempts at capture, but he never warmed up to us, most likely due to the trauma of trying to capture him. It was ok, as we decided he would stay with his family and he would have a loving home where he was safe and fed and could play with his siblings. They were all so cute…all black and white. His sister, Hisser, passed last year (13yrs) and Mama and Possum are the last two. Although Houdini was never cuddled by us, he spent his life cuddling with his family…and he was loved. We will miss having him run around with the rest of the herd, but know he's in heaven now…and no longer suffering.
