Obituary For Mitzi Abernathy

Mitzi came into the world in late fall of 2011 with the threat of a frigid South Dakota winter looming. She and her orange brothers were abandoned by their mother in a dog house at a farm in Pukwana, SD. The lone survivor, she was given a second chance at life after being nursed back to health and moved to Sturgis with her new owners. She was the teensiest fluff-ball that fit in the palm of your hands.

Even as she grew older, Mitzi always stayed small and kitten-like, with her soft tortoiseshell fur that was soft like rabbit fur. Beneath all that fluff was a resilient little soul who survived hardships that amazed even her vet (allegedly the worst case of cat lice, ever!).

Mitzi loved being close to her people. She would curl up on top of your chest beside your face, purring contentedly, and help lift herself into your arms so she could hang over your shoulder and go for people rides. She adored snuggling with her dogs, nuzzling everyone she loved, begging for wet food, and bathing outside in the sunshine on the shelf of her custom cat house.

After living three years beyond her jaw cancer diagnosis, Mitzi was put to rest on May 1, 2026. Though her life began with hardship, she spent the rest of it surrounded by warmth, comfort, and love.

She was small in size, but enormous in love. We will miss you, little Mitzi!

Mitzi..... The sweetest kitty of the Abernathy clan. I will miss your little gargling meows early in the morning when I would walk in to wake up children on carpool days. I will miss your cute little wobbly walk through the house as you aimlessly ambled down the hallways. I will miss how patient you were with my Tasmanian Devil of a toddler. But most importantly, we will all just miss you....the wonderful kitty you were. Rest in peace Mitzi moo. 🩵
