To wake up without him next to me; A time of many tears.

We had a long talk about what was to come for both of us. He told me that we would not come to an end. I found out that in the rule book of a dogs life there is one truth. It is their duty to leave their litter mates, adopt humans of their own, and spend their life bringing joy to them and teaching them how to be better people. If they follow this rule, they are rewarded by re-joining the litter, and becoming young again. He said that he would be waiting patiently for me to join him.

There are things my dogs have taught me:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. Take naps and stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily. On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body. Let others know when they've invaded your territory and avoid biting, when a simple growl will do. No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Be loyal and never pretend to be something you're not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
